Emergency Response

Expertise

Rob has over 30 years’ experience in ‘dry’ work and assists with issues arising out of marine casualties.  He is also a member of our Emergency Response team.

Rob is an experienced FD&D lawyer and handles claims arising out of the carriage of dry bulk and containerised cargoes, including claims under charterparty, bill of lading and other forms of carriage contract. He is well versed in issues arising under the various forms of ICA and has acted in numerous such cases including, notably, a collapsed stow with the loss of more than 80 containers secured by FAT’s on a cross-Pacific voyage in late 2006. He has acted on a number of contamination and shortage claims and regularly advises on issues arising out of charterparties for the carriage of liquid cargoes, including oil major approval issues, off hire disputes and when and how to clause bills of lading. He also advises on events which may result in GA being declared including groundings, collisions and machinery breakdowns and has successfully negotiated satisfactory outcomes for many owners where allegations of unseaworthiness are made following a GA event.

Rob is experienced in many aspects of shipping and trade as well as the insurance and finance arrangements which underpin them. He was a lead partner with a primarily City banking firm in the early 1990s, where he co-led their shipping team to a top-three Euro-money listing as experts in trade finance, particularly on problems relating to letters of credit, pledges and trust receipts. He also co-ordinated a number of multi-jurisdiction ship finance work-outs.

Rob has a keen interest in the Russian language and culture and has travelled extensively in the CIS, advising many Russian-speaking clients and their insurers.

Career

Rob joined the firm in June 2007. He trained with Richards Butler and was admitted as a solicitor in 1981. He then joined Holman Fenwick & Willan before moving on to become a partner at Wilde Sapte, and then Lawrence Graham (1994–1999). Rob read law at Queen’s College, Oxford.
